LouFest Artist Spotlight: Spoon
Even if you don’t think you’ve heard them, you’ve surely heard some of their songs over the past decade—this indie band from Austin has released nine solid albums over the last 20 years, each album producing hits you’ve heard on TV and in movies. Their sound has evolved over time, starting with Pixies-esque punk, moving into guitar-pop, and, with 2017’s Hot Thoughts, pulling in synths and studio magic. We’re talking about Spoon, of course.
In 2010, Metacritic sought to figure out the best reviewed band of past decade, and no one scored higher—not The White Stripes, not Radiohead, nor any of the other bands you might expect. They were arguably the best band from 2000 - 2010.
Their singles will stick in your brain until your dying day. “The Way We Get By,” is the kind of ageless wonder that every band dreams of creating. Your grandparents probably even know it.
We’ve been listening to Hot Thoughts obsessively at the office. One Olio team member has been singing the title track’s chorus, “Hot thoughts all in my mind, all of the time,” non-stop for what feels like weeks. We don’t think she knows the rest of the lyrics. Others have been rocking out to “Can I Sit Next To You.” And one person just listens to death-metal all day.
Spoon will be playing Saturday, September 9th.
